Travel Insurance Tips
by Puela Versiche

Travelling broadens the mind - it is a cliche but true.
Needless to say, things do not always run smoothly, so
putting time aside to sort out the contingency - the travel
insurance - helps us concentrate on the mind broadening
aspects of travel and really have a good time.

Before talking about travel insurance it is worth reminding
ourselves that common sense should travel with us. The
insurance does not allow us to behave in irresponsible ways
that would not wash at home. So if you would not dream of
riding your motorbike without a safety helmet at home, make
sure you wear one when you are away.

In order to get a better deal there are some things that
your should bear in mind. If the holiday company that you
are using has the option for insurance do not opt for it
without considering others, as it may not be the best or
the cheapest.

So make a few telephone calls or web inquiries with the
independent travel insurance specialists. Also ask with
your credit card company and the firm that hold your
household policy. Both of these entities may already be
covering you for some elements of your trip. It is good
practice to book flights and so on by credit card for just
this reason - the odds are that you will automatically be
insured for flight cancellations. Check with these
companies anyway, since some companies give good deals to
existing customers.

You should expect an insurance policy for travel to cover
you for theft and loss of property, money and documents.
Most of them place a fairly clear limit on the amount
however, so you should be aware of the value of your
things. Statistically you are unlikely to need use your
insurance policy, so there is no point paying for hundreds
of thousands of dollars of cover if your gear is only worth
a thousand bucks, but equally if your kit is worth a packet
do not skimp on your insurance!

If you have special equipment - very valuable photography
equipment for instance - then take out special insurance.
Tell the insurance company what you want covered - if you
keep quiet then you will probably find the company will not
pay out if you need to claim, so the only person you are
hurting is yourself.

Similarly, if you are going on an adventure holiday and are
taking part in for example motorcycling or mountain
climbing it is important to get insurance that will cover
you. Tell the insurance company if this is the type of
holiday you are taking. Assuming you are covered may leave
you without insurance cover as for the most part companies
do not like to provide cover for these activities.

Look carefully at the medical cover and be sure it is right
for the place you are going. In particular ensure that
repatriation is covered - if you need to get home because
of ill health you insurance should cover you.

When taking out a policy make sure that your chosen
provider is easily contactable from abroad in case of
emergency. Furthermore it is always advisable to keep
anything that may make the claim easier for example,
receipts for emergency supplies, medical bills or police
reports etc.

There is no need to leave everything to your insurance
policy, and your holiday will be better if you take
responsibility by keeping a copy of each passport in the
group, noting the check number on your travellers checks
etc. Be smart with your money, and put your valuable things
in a hotel safe. Avoid water that you do not think is
clean, have any injection and take any pills before you go.
Enjoy your holiday.
