Family Trips And Auto Safety

Even when family road trips with the children are planned
there is inevitably something that means the chaos at the
last moment. With so many things to remember to take,
including something to occupy the kids. However there are
some simple things that we can do to increase the safety of
our family.
Before even worrying about the auto, the first priority is
a driver check up. Whoever is going to be taking care of
the driving has to be well enough to make the journey
safely. If your driver is tired out, has not got the
spectacles that they need or are on sleep-inducing
medication then it is probably a very good idea to put off
the trip until the driver is fit.
The next thing to do is to make sure the vehicle is up to
the job. A lot of newer automobiles do not have many parts
that the owner is able to check, but there are some things
that you still need take responsibility for.
Check your tyre pressures. Remember that some automobiles
call for slightly increased pressure when they are full. If
the tires are at the wrong pressure then the automobile
will not be fully stable and may tend to drive oddly.
Do a check of all the main bulbs on the vehicle - have
someone stand behind while you press the foot brake and
engage reverse gear. If there is no one around then reverse
up to your garage door - you will be able to see the lights
reflected. Do any of the other regular checks suggested in
your manual, and make sure you have plenty of water in your
windshield washers.
These checks are important to do even if you have just got
your vehicle back from the auto shop - things can go wrong
and bulbs can blow at random.
Within the car, when the trip starts, be firm about seat
belts, front and back. They really do save lives so
everyone should wear them. Crash tests prove that even a
small child in the back can easily create enough force in
an impact to kill the adult in front as well as themselves,
if not properly fastened in. For smaller kids buy child
seats.
Do not forget to take regular stops along route. Falling
asleep at the wheel is a common cause of Autowrecks. Any
time that tiredness comes over you, stop. If you are
driving long distances it is a good idea to arrange to stay
at a motel. The majority of people, particularly those of
us unused to long distances, will guess that we can drive
for longer than we really can. An unexpected stop will
probably cost as a few extra bucks and mean one day less
where we are headed, but it is always the smartest move!
