Satellite Connections
by Simon Greebs
http://www.rtssatellite.com

Long distance communication was once limited to letters and
rare phone calls that could take hours to connect overseas.
This was only a couple of generations ago but everything is
different now. Satellite communications, in conjunction
with cell phones, radio, and telecommunications, are now
capable of transmitting vast amounts of information to
distant locales for all kinds of purposes.

Satellites can receive and redirect information broadcasts
from radios and other transmitters. This information can be
pinpointed to focal reception points for further
dissemination or can be picked up by individual users on
certain kinds of devices. Satellites tell us many things
about the world we live in, such as weather changes,
climate shifts, and even geophysical changes. Military
monitoring and other data can be gleaned from the use of
satellites that float high above the earth.

The use of devices that receive transmissions has increased
dramatically in recent years. Radios abound, for example,
as do televisions and computers. GPS units, or global
positioning systems, help travelers to know their location
and to plot a trip to where they wish to go. Satellites are
changing the way we live today. Satellite television
dishes change the way we watch television programs as well
as the content and timing of such shows. Whereas many of
the baby boomers grew up watching a television that offered
just three main stations, today's current offerings number
in the hundreds. Remote locations with isolated
populations that had never seen a television set before now
commonly watch the latest programs from any corner of the
globe.

Governments apportion billions in funding to maintain,
position, and upgrade satellite systems. As with any
costly program, satellite funding often becomes the center
of attention in political debates and funding committee.
While most people may not be aware of how satellites affect
their lives, the truth is that they will continue to alter
the manner in which we live and conduct business for the
foreseeable future.

For those interesting in familiarizing themselves with
these fascinating devices, try surfing the web by entering
in keywords such as "satellite" or "communications". It
might even be a good idea to get in touch with local
politicians to guage their opinions on satellites and the
level of support they are willing to lend to the
technology. Educate yourself as much as possible so that
you may better influence how the development and
application of satellite technology.
